Inflammation and the Lymphatic System

Inflammation.

We hear that word a lot. We hear it as the cause of heart disease and swollen glands, sinuses, headaches. We call it bloating when it is associated with our guts. We call it edema when it is associated with the feet.

Inflammation happens immediately after an injury and becomes chronic when the body can’t heal. Either way, it is a rudimentary response of the body to protect itself. It is a signal that something is not right and it is a cry for help, a cry for action.

If you begin to swell (a form of inflammation) from an allergic reaction, you will run for an epi-pen or some Benadryl and then steer clear of the trigger. However, it gets a little trickier when you are just slightly swollen and have felt that way for a long time. You tell yourself that your feet always look a little swollen by the end of the day and you just need to get off of them. And then, miraculously, overnight, they are back to normal. That may be the norm. But I ask you, is that normal?

There could be multiple triggers and issues that need to be addressed. One of those is the lymphatic system. This is the system that takes out the garbage. Locally and globally. Let’s face it. We make waste products along with creating energy and we must be able to eliminate the waste.

"Without lymphatic vessels to return fluids to the bloodstream, people would puff up and their skin would feel like mashed potatoes. Fluid might drip through the skin." (Source: Gross Anatomy by Christine Becker pg. 38)

In addition to inflammation, signs that your lymphatic system is not functioning properly include feeling stiff and sore when you wake up in the morning, Brain fog, fatigue, and digestive issues.

Let's get this piece of the puzzle to function optimally so that we can feel our best.

Here are 5 tips for a healthy lymphatic system

  2. Reduce your exposure to toxic chemicals such as pesticides which create challenges for your body’s filtration system.

  3. Develop a movement practice you love!

  4. Put your feet UP! Raising your feet above your heart will help flush the lymphatic system.

  5. Make an appointment to find the right way to support your system.
